New Study Finds CBD Improves Arthritis Symptoms In Dogs
If your dog struggles with arthritis, they are not alone. According to Veterinary Partner, approximately 25% of dogs will be diagnosed with arthritis in their lifetime, and as many as 60% will show radiographic evidence of it.
For those watching their dog wrestle with the pain and mobility issues that come with arthritis, thankfully, there is good news. CBD has been found by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine to successfully treat the side effects of arthritis in both dogs and humans alike.
The study, published in PAIN magazine, was conducted by a group of researchers at Baylor College of Medicine specifically on dogs because of how closely canine arthritic symptoms mimic how they appear in the human body. The hope was that they could find a natural aid for both humans and animals.
To start their experiment, the researchers decided to first treat lab-grown human and mouse cells with CBD before advancing to live mouse trials. The result was a decided decrease in both inflammatory molecules and immune cells linked to arthritis.
Next, the team observed twenty canines who were known to have arthritis in a double-blind study. Half of the dogs were given CBD, and the other half received a placebo, and neither the owners nor the veterinarian's administering the doses knew which was which.
The study spanned four weeks where both the owners and veterinarians reported the dog's pain level changes, gait improvement, and overall condition. Additionally, bloodwork was done to note any changes in kidney and liver function.
The conclusion was that in most cases, CBD would aid dogs in managing arthritis symptoms. Dr. Matthew Halpert, the lead researcher on the study, summed up their findings by saying, "We found encouraging results. Nine of the ten dogs on CBD showed benefits, which remained for two weeks after the treatment stopped. We did not detect alterations in the blood markers we measured, suggesting that, under the conditions of our study, the treatment seems to be safe."
What does this mean for your dog?
Arthritis can be a severe, degenerative disease. Up until now, owners have had to rely on NSAIDs to help their pets cope. Long-term use of these drugs can often lead to kidney, liver, or digestion problems.
The introduction of CBD as a solution for arthritis pain will allow dogs to safely and effectively reduce symptoms without the risk of dangerous reactions or harsh adverse effects. The results of this trial are a considerable step forward in the fight against arthritis.
How do you make sure to choose the right CBD for your dog?
Not all CBD is created equal. It's essential to choose a CBD that will be effective in helping your pet properly. That means you need to pay attention to the cannabidiol content and strength, the manufacturing process, and ensure that it's void of THC. Always check that the CBD you want to purchase has its Certificate of Analysis (COA) readily available, so you can know precisely what the product contains.
At Pet Standards, we pride ourselves on creating the highest quality product possible. We work alongside veterinarians to ensure that our ingredients and manufacturing are the safest possible. Pet Standards CBD is made using only locally sourced, organic ingredients that contain absolutely no THC, so your dog can get all the goodness of CBD without any sleepy side effects.
